Renting a catamaran in Croatia – experience true natural beauty on the Adriatic Sea.

National and nature parks, flawless ecology and crystal clear water

When sailing in Croatia, you can completely immerse yourself in nature. Croatia boasts 1800 kilometres of Adriatic coastline which include 1185 uninhabited islands where nature has scarcely been touched.

Sailing amongst nature - the perfect sailing location for novices, families and short getaways.

Croatia’s proximity to other countries, as well as its excellent maritime infrastructure, make spontaneous sailing holidays possible. The short sailing distances and protected areas mean that Croatia is a fantastic option for families and sailing novices.

Often nicknamed the “Caribbean of the Mediterranean”, Croatia awaits you with the best conditions for your catamaran rental. With its long coastline, breath-taking landscapes and sparkling translucent waters, Croatia is the perfect location for you to rent a catamaran.

A catamaran rental in Croatia: the dreamiest destinations

The warm Mediterranean climate, the uniqueness of the water, and the region’s diversity cause Croatia to become a magical destination for your sailing holiday. The coastline runs through four regions, thereby offering one of Europe’s largest boating zones. From Istria in the north to Dubrovnik in the south, there is a vast selection of sailing areas to choose from, each with its own appeal. With so many catamarans to choose from, everyone will find their perfect vessel in Croatia.

In northern Croatia, the Istrian peninsula, which includes the cities of Pula and Rovinij as well as the Kvarner Bay and the islands of Krk, Rab, Cres and Losin, invites you to sail in its enchanting surroundings.

To the south-east, there is a 175-kilometre-long coastal strip consisting of countless islands, which together form the diverse sailing area of Kornati. A channel forms between the Kornati island chain and the mainland, which provides pleasantly calm sailing conditions. In addition to the enchanting Kornati islands, you should also pay a visit to the fascinating Krka waterfalls during your sailing trip or motorboat excursion.

On the coast of central Dalmatia, Split and Trogir, as well as numerous marinas in the immediate vicinity, are perfect starting points for the third section of the Croatian coast. From here you can easily reach the enchanting islands of Brač, Hvar, Korčula, Vis or Lastovo.

Finally, from the fortress city of Dubrovnik, you can sail north to the Elaphites or the impressive nature reserves in the north of the island of Mljet. In addition, Dubrovnik is often used as a starting port for trips to Montenegro. Of course, when organising a boat trip in this region, you cannot miss out on an extensive visit to this fascinating city itself, whose historic old town has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Your catamaran rental in Croatia: what should you look out for?

If you rent a catamaran in Croatia, you should note the following:

  • In order to sail a catamaran in Croatia, you need to have an International Certificate of Competence for Inland and Coastal Waters. You or one of your crew members must also have a radio licence.
  • If you are travelling by car, you will need a valid driving licence and your vehicle documents. Remember that there is a speed limit of 130 km/h in Croatia.
  • You will need your identity card to enter Croatia.

Tip: Make sure that all documents are complete and valid before you leave. Then nothing will stand in the way of your dream sailing holiday in Croatia.

What are the sailing conditions in the Adriatic Sea?

The Adriatic coast is considered one of the most beautiful and varied coasts in Europe and therefore is a perfect choice for your Croatian catamaran excursion. Whether you want to go island hopping, plan extended voyages out at sea or long for a more land-based selection of activities - a catamaran rental in Croatia promises an unforgettable experience for everyone aboard.

In addition to its gorgeous coastline, Croatia's popularity as a sailing destination is due to its idyllic sailing conditions. The south in particular attracts a large number of visitors as there is consistent summer weather and bathing temperatures from April to October. Due to the temperate weather and the sheltering offshore islands, Croatia is a perfect entry-level sailing destination for families and novices. Thanks to the varied coastal landscape, you will never get bored on board and a dense network of well-developed marinas and harbours allows for perfect sailing. However, anchoring for free is generally no longer possible due to the many buoy fields that charge fees.

The best time to rent a catamaran is during the warm, dry summer months between May and September. However, although the weather is mostly pleasant, sailors must be vigilant because the weather can change quickly in the Adriatic. The three winds, bora, maestral and sirocco (also jugo), are predominant on the Croatian coast.

What are the Adriatic coast’s dominant winds?

Bora

A dry, cold wind, mainly coming from the north or northeast.

Bora winds can occur in heavy gusts at any time of the year, but especially from April to October.

The wind speed varies from a light breeze to strong gale force winds.

Maestral

A northwesterly thermal Seawind, which, like the Bora, is accompanied by beautiful weather and reaches an average strength of between 3-5 Beaufort.

Scirocco/Jugo

A warm, humid, east-south-easterly to south-south-easterly wind which blows along the entire Adriatic. It is normally accompanied by high swells, heavily overcast skies and persisten train. This wind is less dangerous than the Bora, as it never starts suddenly and blows rather steadily.
