Your Catamaran Charter in Eternal Summer

Sail in eternal summer with the Caribbean's gentle tropical breeze. Your catamaran charter in the BVI will take you on the routes of historical explorers and legendary pirates to culinary delights on land and sporting activities in the bays.

Catamaran charters in the British Virgin Islands: your Caribbean sailing trip

The islands of the British Virgin Islands, mostly volcanic in origin, are a sailor's paradise. Surround yourself with the crystal clear sea, a dreamlike tropical landscape, and calm protected waters. Nowhere else in the Caribbean can different islands be so easily combined with each other.

On land, there are a variety of good restaurants and pubs that invite you to jump up every night. See and discover the Baths in the southwest of Virgin Gorda. Over the centuries, the Atlantic Ocean has washed away the huge granite stones and created natural swimming pools.

The capital of the British Virgins is Road Town on Tortola. The cozy yacht sports center exudes a colorful Caribbean flair. With Scansail, get connected to boat owners all around the British Virgin Islands to charter yachts that fit what you need.

Rent a Catamaran With or Without a Skipper

Sailing vacations can be made easy when you get a crewed catamaran in the British Virgin Islands. When you rent a boat with a captain and crew on board, you can relax and know that your yacht charter vacation will be a breeze. Your captain can take care of navigation and guide you to the best spots in the Caribbean.

They know the BVI waters, so they can safely guide your catamaran rental through shallow waters in case you want to do some sandbar hopping. Boat rentals with Scansail let you filter the BVI catamaran charters without a skipper, so you can find the right options for you.

With your choice of sailing yachts or motor yachts, you can search for options with or without a skipper to get the catamaran experience you are looking for!

More information on the BVI

With over 40 islands, the BVI is a British overseas territory with a governor and Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. There are about 28,000 inhabitants on the islands, with half of them living on the main island of Tortola. In 1492, Christopher Columbus discovered these islands and named them after Saint Ursula and her eleven thousand virgins (Santa Ursula y las once mil virgines), on which the present name is based.

After the Spaniards, the Dutch settled on the islands, which became an important stopover for ships sailing between America and Europe. At the end of the 17th century, the English occupied Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Anegada.

In the past, the islands offered popular bolt holes for privateers and pirates, as there were also many escape routes between the islands. Today, tourism and offshore banking are the country’s main source of income. The local language is English.

The BVI is a perfect area for sailing. The Sir Francis Drake Channel and its outer islands offer a great deal of protection from the Atlantic swell. The sea water is clear, turquoise, and warm everywhere. There are beautiful bays with sandy beaches, black granite rocks, coral reefs and many wonderful sandbars and restaurants with names such as the Soggy Dollar Bar, Foxy's, Mad Dogs, Pirates Bight and of course Pusser's, where the famous Pusser's Rum is served and sold.

Sailing conditions

Weather

For your catamaran charter in the British Virgin Islands, you will have a pleasant, subtropical climate with temperatures of 25 to 30 degrees Celsius in winter and 77 to 89 degrees Fahrenheit summer. The trade wind ensures a constantly blowing fresh, cooling breeze. The water temperatures are constant at about 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

Wind conditions

There are constantly blowing trade winds: in summer from the southeast with 3 to 4 Bft.; in winter from northeast with 4 to 6 Bft.

Water depths and tides

In the Sir Francis Drake Channel, the sea is often very calm. Coastlines and especially straits between the islands influence the direction and speed of the currents. Near the tips of the islands, currents can be up to three knots.

Our favorite BVI Islands

Tortola

J.R. O'Neal Botanic Gardens is a small, peaceful garden with tropical plants, butterflies and birds. Station Avenue, Road Town.

Sunny Caribe Spice Shop & Art Gallery offers spices, Caribbean sauces and tea. Nice little souvenirs for family and friends at home. 119 Main Street, Road Town.

Bamboushay, a pottery shop with ceramic items, lamps and plates in Caribbean style. 109 Main Street, Road Town.

Callwood Rum Distillery has been producing dark and white rum specialties for over 200 years. Arundel Estate, Cane Garden Bay.

The BVI Spring Regatta, a six-day event, usually at the end of March – beginning of April, starting at the Nanny Cay Marina.

Salt Island

Diving and snorkeling at the wreck of the Royal Mail Ship "Rhône". This 95-meter-long ship was built in England in 1865 with an iron hull. The shipnsank in a hurricane off Salt Island in 1867.

Filming location for the 1997 film by Peter Yates "The Deep" with Jacqueline Bisset and Nick Nolte. A real must during your catamaran rent BVI.

Virgin Gorda

Gorda Peak and Gorda Peak National Park with a variety of native and exotic plants, extensively reforested with mahogany trees. A lookout tower at the top offers spectacular views of some of the surrounding islands.

Bitter End Yacht Club & Resort, a full-service marina with restaurants, bars, boutiques, which is also visited by regatta yachts during the BVI Spring Regattas.

Jost van Dyke

Foxy's Bar and Restaurant in Great Harbour offers freshly tapped beer from its own brewery and two rum specialties, the rum for which is also made in-house, namely Sly Fox and Dread Fox. Local music bands regularly play in the beach bar.

Soggy Dollar Bar in White Bay with restaurant and hotel. The name comes from the fact that you have to wade or swim through the sea to get to this bar. Here you get the original painkiller made from aromatic dark rum, cream of coconut, pineapple and orange juice with a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg. The exact mixture for the recipe is, of course, kept secret.
