Despite this, sailors still have to remain vigilant because the weather can change quickly in the Adriatic. The three dominant winds on the Croatian coast are the Bora, Maestral and Shirocco (also Ju, go).

What are the dominant winds on the Adriatic coast?

Bora

A dry, cold, mainly northern to the east wind, that can arise at any time of the year (but especially between April and October) and creates powerful gusts. The speed of a Bora can be anywhere between a light breeze and a stormy wind.

Maestral

This is a thermal sea wind, and blows primarily from the northwest. Similarly to the Bora, it is accompanied by beautiful weather and reaches average strengths of 3–5 Beaufort.

Schirokko/strength

This is a warm, humid, east-southeasterly to south-southeasterly wind. It is usually accompanied by high swell, overcast skies, and heavy rain. This type of wind is safer than the Bora because it never starts up suddenly and blows steadily
